Hello, my name is Nicole Kriegl. I would like to acknowledge the Tsimshian people of Kitsumkalum and Kitselas on whose traditional unceded territory I live and learn. My dog Otis and I are very humbled to call Terrace our home. I am a person who loves to cook/bake and read all different kinds of books. I do not do a lot of travelling and enjoy sticking close to home where my family and friends are. When I was growing up my father got me interested in collecting postage stamps from around the world, which I still do today. I have a keen interest in the Indigenous culture that surrounds the Northwest Coast area. I have done some growing of vegetables in my small garden and I always have lots of flowering pots to brighten my front entrance of my home.
I have always had an interest in education since high school. Taking the tutoring program in my grade eleven and twelve year showed me that I enjoyed helping others learn when they though they could not. I started working in School District 52 when I was nineteen as a Special Educator Assistant. During this time, I worked in both elementary and high school with students who have learning disabilities. Having to work and support myself made it difficult for me to go back to school. In 2017, after losing my father unexpectedly, I decided to go back to college and work on getting enough credits to attend the UNBC Education program. My college courses lead to an Associates of Arts Degree with a Specialization in First Nations Studies in 2020.
I have chosen the profession of education because of my strength of wanting to help students achieve their goals while they are in school. I enjoy teaching and seeing the student’s eyes light up when they understand a concept that is being taught. The students in my classroom should know that I am there to help them, encourage them, allow them to grow in their strengths, will always have an inclusive classroom and learning will be fun.
